An hot mirror filter is designed to pass visible light while blocking infrared and ultraviolet light with a sharp cutoff at either end. It works by interference. The filter has a coating with many layers of a transparent dielectric with alternate refractive indices. The spacing of the layers block light by destructive inteference, causing unwanted wavelengths to be selectively reflected.
